Melting Pot of Beauty

How did attending an HBCU shape your perception of beauty?

Attending Hampton University was like stepping into a melting pot of beauty, and it truly transformed my perception of what it means to be beautiful. In my professional journey today, where I'm entrusted with showcasing diversity in beauty for top retailers, I often draw from the authentic beauty I witnessed and experienced during my time at HU.

From 2004 to 2008, there was a shift—a renaissance, if you will—towards embracing natural hair. We collectively said goodbye to relaxers and dove headfirst into a world of silk presses, protective styles, braids, quick weaves, and glorious natural afros. It was a celebration of texture in all its forms.

On campus, beauty wasn't about conforming to a singular standard; it was about individuality and authenticity. Surrounded by a sea of stunning women with their unique styles, I was constantly in awe. The energy of acceptance and admiration was palpable—it's something that words can't quite capture; you truly had to experience it firsthand.

Being part of such a vibrant community at HU helped me understand that beauty isn't confined to one mold—it's diverse, multifaceted, and deeply personal. And that's a lesson I carry with me every day as I strive to ensure that all women feel seen and celebrated in the world of beauty.

What’s your favorite thing about Black culture? HBCU culture?

My favorite thing about Black culture? Where do I even begin? It's like a rich tapestry woven with flavors, rhythms, and stories that resonate deep within me. From the soulful beats of our music to the tantalizing aromas of our cuisine, every aspect speaks to our resilience and creativity. Our history, though fraught with complexities, is a testament to our strength and determination to thrive against all odds.

And then there's HBCU culture—a world unto itself. It's more than just an educational experience; it's a way of life. The bonds forged within those historic walls are unbreakable, woven from shared experiences, late-night study sessions, and spirited homecomings. From the vibrant Greek life to the cherished traditions, attending Hampton University was like finding my home away from home—a decision I'll forever cherish.

As a Black Woman what does hair signify for you?

Baby hair with a side pony and one of my fave beauty girls in the world, my Mere

Hair for me is like an ever-changing canvas that reflects my identity as a Black woman. It's not just about style; it's about self-expression and empowerment. From rocking a sleek, tight bun with those carefully laid baby hairs (yes, I'm guilty of that!), to switching it up with protective styles depending on my mood, my hair journey is a blend of love, frustration, and discovery.

Navigating my natural hair, which is a mix of textures with soft waves and curls reminiscent of a baby's, has its challenges, especially with my busy lifestyle. I'm still on the journey of fully embracing it, but I'm finding my way through experimenting with different products and techniques. There's a hopefulness within me that one day my hair will reach its full potential in length and density, allowing me to flaunt those curls and waves freely. Until then, it's all about protection and patience.
