Rituals of Beauty
1. How do you normally wear your natural hair and why? how has your love for your natural hair evolved and in what way?
- I normally wear my natural hair in braids or a braid-out or high puff when it’s out.
I prefer ease with my styles because I’m fairly active and wash my hair every 7-14 days.
My natural hair has evolved from my big chop in 2011 to now. I didn’t fully embrace my hair until the last 4-5 years. I got complacent with back to back protective styles. With reflection, I lacked patience with my hair. Now having I’m having fun by do more styles at home like mini twists and having a relationship with a stylist. The focus is healthy hair and scalp over length. However, being more curious and patient with my hair has helped a lot. By knowing what styling products work best, detangling my fine strands and having consistent trim schedule I have retained more length!
2. What styles do you want to try and why?
-I want to try silk press, boho knotless and a sew in. I haven’t had a silk press in almost two years, Boho knotless I haven’t tried yet and I’m getting FOMO and a sew in because why not?! I’ve been tempted to cut my hair again, we’ll see! Maybe my next milestone birthday.
Lastly, I want to try more color when getting braids and/or sew in. Medium 1B knotless is my comfort zone but protective styles allow for experimentation without major commitment. It’s just hair, it can be changed.
3. What does beauty mean to you?
-Beauty is self expression and curiosity. It’s a reflection of my mood or a chance to try something different. I find joy in the ritual of beauty everything from shopping, getting ready to finding a new scent for vacation. As I’ve gotten older, I like seeing how my beauty choices and style has evolved through the years when looking back at photos and videos.
4. What does softness mean to you?
-Softness is remaining present and honoring my intuition. It’s taking the time to do an everything shower and being hydrated (literally) to spending time with my loved ones or getting flowers on a Tuesday just because. I am able to remain soft while working a stressful job as a ER nurse by having hobbies, movement and giving myself grace.
