Length Retention Hacks from a Licensed Cosmetologist

Has wash day ever felt like a chore or all day process to you?

Detangling does not have to be a super involved process that is painful and causes you to lose additional hair. Here are some quick tips to ensure that you are retaining hair length and moving in the right direction to achieve your #HairGoals

#1: After thoroughly cleansing the hair and rinsing out shampoo, completely saturate the hair with water again. Hair should be completely soaked and dripping wet before applying conditioner.

#2: Using a high quality, water soluble conditioner, emulsify it in your hands, and apply it to the hair. Open up the hair and make sure the conditioner is actually coating everything from roots to ends.

#3: Add more water! This is an important step that a lot of people skip, but conditioners are rich, emollient-forward products that are concentrated and breakdown with water. We want to get the full range of benefits a conditioner can provide, like slip for detangling, so we need more water to make the magic happen.

#4: Use a detangling tool with sturdy but flexible, relatively close together bristles. A wide tooth comb is not appropriate for most people to properly detangle. A lot of the tangles slip right through those wide spaces!

#5: Begin at the ends and slowly make your way toward your roots. With your non-brush holding hand, hold the hair with a bit of tension an inch or two above the area you’re detangling. This helps to reduce pulling on the scalp and accidentally removing hairs that aren’t ready to be shed yet.

Try these tips on your next wash day for easy, pain free, hair-retaining, and thorough detangling!
