The Things That Make Me Soft

Scottie Beam for Soft Rows

Scottie Beam once tweeted “I know the things that makes me strong. I don’t know what makes me soft. That will be my journey in 2024.”

Learning what makes us soft, especially as Black women is no easy feat. We are often raised to be strong, independent, and to not show softness which was viewed as a sign of weakness. But it’s been the saving grace and reason of why I’m building Soft Rows-to create a safe space and soft landing for us to be more curious and gentle with our hair and ourselves.

My journey towards softness has looked like giving myself grace, learning what battles to pick, but also finding comforts with myself and my thoughts. It isn’t a destination, but I hope that finding softness someday, will lead to freedom and ease in my heart, my soul, and every aspect of life. -Quani

What are the things that make you strong?

I was born into strength.Thats really all i know. All the women in my family have proved to be the strongest women i know. Its in my bloodline. The many trials and tribulations along the journey has made me strong. I fall but i never break

What are you hoping to find during your journey towards softness?

I hope to find pieces of myself i've never got to celebrate and explore.

What does being soft mean to you?

Acknowledging that my armor is not required for every step of my journey. Not waiting and preparing for the other shoe to drop. Allowing others to be gentle with me, understanding that NOT everyone uses gentleness as a tool of manipulation.
